Founded in May of 1950, Navegação São Miguel (NSM) began by providing coastal services transporting salt along the coast of Rio de Janeiro. In 1964, after acquisition by its present-day owners, bunkering operations were initiated in the Guanabara Bay (Rio de Janeiro) to supply the then incipient Petrobras oil giant. Fresh water deliveries were was also initiated to a fill a demand from the recently formed naval industry in the port of Rio de Janeiro.
After 18 years of activities in Rio, the company expanded its bunkering operations to the Port of Vitória, in Espírito Santo. Some time later, the affiliate Skymar Ltda. was created to assume local contracts. In the beginning of the 90s decade, NSM began operations at the Port of Santos, supplying fuel and water to ocean-going vessels berthing in this busy port.
Every year, NSM is responsible for more than 9 thousand fuel loading and supply operations to ships and has become the top ranking service provider in the region backed by nearly 40 specialized maritime vessels. Additionally, the company relies on a fleet of 13 specialty vessels (2 PSV, 6 LH and 5 AHTS), marking a significant presence in the offshore oil and gas services and supply industry. NSM also operates chartered tankers to carry chemical products in Guanabara Bay and manages construction and repair work in its own shipyard located in São Gonçalo (Rio de Janeiro).
NSM maintains operational bases in the ports of Rio de Janeiro, Santos and Vitória, besides offices in Macaé (RJ) and Aracaju (Sergipe), extending the company’s capacity to service the entire Brazilian coastline. A team of nearly 800 permanent specialists under continuous training are responsible for maintaining all operations.
Environmental responsibility is part of the strategic business policy at NSM. The company was a pioneer in Brazil in the implantation of Double Hull construction which today represents nearly 100% of the bunkering vessel fleet. The fleet also includes Oil Spill Recovery Vessels (OSRV) that not only carry cargo but are standby ready to respond to oil spillage emergencies. NSM is a respected founding member of the Guanabara Bay Emergency Plan and, from 2002 to 2004, the company acted as Plan Coordinator.
NSM has been internationally certified by ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISM Code (International Safety Management Code) and ISPS Code (International Ship and Port Facility Security) norms and standards.
